why acoustic spray is the future of improving acoustics in Britain

As open plan buildings remain highly popular, and people increasingly seek multi-functional spaces, the demand for discreet, high-performance sound control continues to rise. Although traditional acoustic treatments are effective, they clash with modern aesthetics and can restrict what you can do with the design of a room.

That’s where acoustic sprays come in. Acoustic finishes applied as a spray offer architects and designers a way to improve sound quality without compromising on visual appeal.

At Oscar Acoustics, we’ve been leading this change for over four decades. With more than 47 years’ experience and over 27 years specialising in spray-applied acoustic finishes, we are proud to be Great Britain’s leading provider of seamless acoustic sprays: trusted by architects, designers, and contractors nationwide.

how do acoustic sprays work?

Acoustic spray is a seamless treatment designed to absorb sounds and reduce reverberation within a space. It is typically applied to ceilings or higher walls and its seamless finish blends into the architectural surroundings.

Unlike suspended acoustic panels or tiles, acoustic sprays enable you to keep the height of the ceiling and the design you were after. It can follow the contours of vaulted ceilings, exposed structures and complex geometries, making it brilliant for both new builds and refurbishment projects. The result is a visually clean surface that significantly enhances the comfort of those who use it.

meeting the demands of modern spaces

One of the key reasons acoustic sprays are gaining popularity is their versatility. Modern buildings need more flexible environments: spaces that cater for work, learning, social interaction or entertainment. Because of this, they require intelligent design solutions that consider both aesthetics and acoustic performance.

Poor acoustics can cause a range of issues: from rising stress levels and fatigue to difficulties concentrating, productivity and privacy. In schools, bad acoustics make it difficult for students to learn. In offices, they hinder focus and communication. In hospitality venues, it makes it much harder for anyone to fully enjoy themselves.

By applying acoustic spray, designers and building owners can dramatically improve the clarity of speech, reduce echoes and create a more comfortable and pleasant environment—all without distracting from the look of a space. In fact, our sprays enhance the appearance of the surface they’re applied to.

supporting people’s wellbeing and productivity

The health and wellbeing of everyone is now a top priority in architecture. As evidence continues to grow around the impact of acoustics on our mental health and cognitive performance, acoustic treatment is no longer seen as optional.

Oscar Acoustics’ SonaSpray finishes are used to reduce reverberation and noise build-up in all kinds of spaces, including:

  • Schools and universities for focused learning and to make teaching clearer and easier to deliver
  • Commercial offices to support productivity and mental wellbeing
  • Restaurants and cafés for an improved ambience and to make conversation easier
  • buildings and transport hubs, for clear announcements and less stress on commuters.
  • Entertainment venues and arenas to control sound reflections and protect people’s hearing

Our spray-applied finishes help designers meet standards such as BB93 and can achieve any sound absorption class by increasing and decreasing the material depth to suit the acoustic requirement and project budget.

They’re designed with sustainability, fire safety and long-term durability in mind. SonaSpray exceeds requirements set under the updated Fire Safety: Approved Document B and its Class 0 to BS476 & B-s1,d0 fire rating provides little to no smoke and absolutely no droplets, aiding in the safe escape of occupants.

sustainability credentials

Today’s construction projects must also align with environmental goals. Our acoustic spray systems are developed with sustainability in mind. They are made from recycled paper and other rapidly renewable resources that sequester carbon, are free from harmful VOCs, and support clean, healthy indoor air quality.

The SonaSpray range achieves M1 certification as a Low Emitting Building Material, GreenGuard Gold, Cradle to Cradle, whilst satisfying many features under the WELL Building Standard. They also Contributes towards many sustainable design and health certification systems, including BREEAM, SKA, Living Building Challenge and more.
