acoustic spray design benefits

SonaSpray K-13 Special is a seamless acoustic spray that absorbs sound energy and reduces reverberation times and noise levels in any interior space.

Design benefits include:

Can be applied directly to most substrates including concrete, plasterboard, GRP, steel, glass and expanded polystyrene.
Can be applied to complex architectural elements such as barrel vaults, domes and corrugated decks.
The seamless acoustic spray follows the lines of whatever is underneath, enabling designers to achieve curves and shapes.
Applied at speed compared with labour-intensive stick-on panel alternatives.
Suitable for application behind suspended mesh and timber ceilings.

A window ledge with two stripey cushions and a teapot on it, there are many trees outside.

sustainable acoustic sprays

SonaSpray K-13 Special contributes towards many sustainable design and health certification systems including BREEAM, SKA, Living Building Challenge and adds up to 17 points towards the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating of a project. The sound absorbing spray achieves M1 certification as Low Emitting Building Materials – the best possible classification.

SonaSpray K-13 Special is compliant with CDPH/ CA Section 01350 and are GREENGUARD Gold Certified for Indoor Air Quality. GREENGUARD Gold Products are now confirmed to show compliance with BREEAM rating system HEA Indoor Air Quality and ensure that a product has met some of the world’s most rigorous and comprehensive standards for low emissions of VOC’s into indoor air.

The SonaSpray acoustic spray range is also covered by an Environmental Product Declaration in accordance with ISO 14025 and meets the requirements of the Living Building Challenge and LEED. SonaSpray K-13 Special acoustic spray achieves Cradle2Cradle and contributes towards satisfying many features under the WELL Building Standard®.

Made of fire treated, recycled paper and other rapidly renewable natural resources, SonaSpray can effectively lower the carbon footprint of the building project by sequestering rich stores of carbon for the life of the structure or application. Combined with the right ventilation and thermal insulation, SonaSpray® can aid in condensation control by inhaling and exhaling moisture as the indoor climate changes.

Product quality and consistency is also of major importance so is under continual development. When using new materials, it is easy to control this but recycled content has to be the priority. To control this, SonaSpray is manufactured to ISO 9001 and is installed using an Oscar Acoustics four stage quality assurance plan.

Test DATA certified by TNO Technical University Delft NL. SonasSpray acoustic ceiling and wall finish tests were on a solid backing. A panel backing with air space behind the panel will change absorption; normally there is improved absorption at low frequency. Substrates likely to provide increased performance include plasterboard with the use of an air gap behind, rib deck or profiled metal sheet. • All products are included within all current NBS software.
  • Recessed and surface mounted items possible – see website for more information.
  • Standard detail drawings for most situations.
  • Bespoke detailing solutions possible.

SonaSpray acoustic ceiling and wall finish insulates by creating dead air spaces macroscopically between and within the hollow cellulose fibres. Testing on actual buildings demonstrates that sprayed insulation outperforms fibreglass bats that are mechanically retained. 100mm thick U = 0.32 W/m2K

For areas such as indoor pools and ice arenas, SonaSpray K-13 Special aids in condensation control. The proper combination of SonaSpray K-13 Special and ventilation prevents condensation on metal, concrete and other surfaces. SonaSpray K-13 Special reduces ventilation requirements, saving in both the ventilation equipment investment operating costs.

  • Dry Weight of SonaSpray K-13 Special per 10mm thickness = 0.90 kg/m2
  • Wet Weight of SonaSpray K-13 Special per 10mm thickness = 1.72 kg/m2
  • Dry Weight of SonaSpray K-13 Special per 20mm thickness = 1.80 kg/m2
  • Wet Weight of SonaSpray K-13 Special per 20mm thickness = 3.44 kg/m2

SonaSpray K-13 Special acoustic ceiling and wall finish can be applied to virtually any substrate; some surfaces may need priming to control suction. Old surfaces may need a barrier coating to prevent staining from leaching out contaminants while the surface is wet. Fully cured SonaSpray K-13 Special will improve strength as well as reducing noise reverberation.

The adhesive used with SonaSpray K-13 Special acoustic ceiling and wall finish provides a strong, durable and resilient bond. When fully cured, surface strength of old plaster will typically improve.

Recessed services e.g. spot lighting will require a halo spacer to match the material depth. Oscar Acoustics manufacture and install stainless steel halo spacers (drawing available) to the same size as the hole cut out. Stop beads may be required around openings which again we can supply and install. Specially designed access hatches are also available through Profab, enabling the SonaSpray to continue across the hatch door. Problems can arrise from using other hatches. These items are at extra cost and are to be purchsed direct from the Profab. Please contact Oscar Acoustics for details and item code. Surface mounted fittings e.g. hanging/pendant lights will require pattresses to match the material depth. Please contact Oscar Acoustics for further advice.

Please Note: 90% of flangeless fittings do not work properly with any acoustic finish. If you are specifying a flangeless fitting, please contact Oscar Acoustics for advice.

SonaSpray K-13 Special acoustic ceiling and wall finish can be quickly and effectively applied to any prepared surface and construction configuration where noise reverberation is a problem. This allows minimum working down time in existing structures with abilities to meet critical deadlines in new construction. SonaSpray K-13 Special has a medium surface texture and is suited to reducing noise reverberation in large rooms and halls. When applying to walls, position acoustic finishes above head height. For lower walls or areas of high impact, see EchoCheck acoustic blocks.

Other SonaSpray products offer a finer surface texture.

Please note that it is important not to use moisture resistant plasterboard as this can cause staining of wet applied products. Oil based stain barrier paints can be used to prevent this. Please consult Oscar Acoustics for more information.

A minimum of 12.5mm thick plasterboard, installed to British Gypsum specification should be used.

SonaSpray K-13 Special acoustic ceiling and wall finish can be over-painted (consult Oscar Acoustics technical department before painting as noise reverberation controlling properties can be significantly reduced if applied incorrectly), or applied with additional coats of SonaSpray. Small areas of damage can be repaired by hand.

If SonaSpray K-13 Special acoustic ceiling and wall finish is disturbed or damaged so that fibre is released into the atmosphere, the resulting contamination is harmless. Maintenance work can be undertaken while the building is occupied. Please refer to COSHH data for detailed product analysis.

Safe and Sound: Oscar Acoustics deliver ‘future ready’ office of tomorrow

what our customers say

Quote Icon

“Magical stuff! Well worth it – a huge improvement to one of our high ceilinged classrooms. The feedback is that there is a massive difference and it is definitely a more productive acoustic environment for the children and staff.

Thank you very much for improving things for us.”

Abigail Hercules, Bursar, Dallington School

“Having used SonaSpray on several other projects, we knew how effective it was at reducing office noise. It’s quickly become our go-to product and our clients are always happy to follow our recommendations due to the huge difference it makes, both in open-plan areas and cellular spaces.

Having used a competitor product recently, we noticed a drop in standard and only SonaSpray delivers both in terms of aesthetics and sound management. The finish on the project was exceptional and hides any imperfections, making it as visually strong as it is at reducing noise.”

Mariachiara Dal Pozzo, Associate Director, TP Bennett

“Following the recent installation of nearly 3,000m2 of SonaSpray K-13 Special to the corridors, classroom and activity hall ceilings, plus an extra 200m2 of works to the main sports hall at St. Pauls Way Community School, Bouygues UK Ltd would like to thank Oscar Acoustics for their hard work in delivering a high standard of work within our programme, for which speed of installation was critical.

Your site teams should be commended on…”

Chris Stevens, Operations Director, Bouygues UK – SonaSpray K-13 Special

“I’d just like to convey my utter delight and relief at being able to use the new large hall. It was literally visible this evening, how our Beaver Scouts calmed as they moved from the small hall to the larger, more peaceful room. Thanks to you we had one of our best ever indoor activities. It was calm, fun and enjoyable for all. Thank you so much, I am only vaguely aware how much work you have put into this project, and want to make sure you know how much we appreciate it.

Well worth the money!”
