how can employers encourage, not force, staff back to the office?

Blue-chip businesses like Amazon and Barclays are leading the ‘Great Return to Work’ – but with employees reluctant to forego the comforts of homeworking, what steps can employers take to transform workplace design and create desirable spaces that staff actually want to return to?
That very question has been at the heart of Oscar Acoustics’ latest deep dive whitepaper. In Shaping Future-Ready Work Spaces for the Great Return to the Office, we explore the factors keeping employees away from the office – and offer actionable advice to encourage them back.
Our survey of corporate employers and employees revealed several findings that should give business leaders pause for thought, particularly the issue of office noise. We found that over half of employees consider their office noisy, and that less than 1 in 3 feel their office environment are conducive to productivity and their return to work.
The insights don’t stop there. Our whitepaper was also heavily informed by expert views shared in our recent roundtable, Sound Strategy: The Workplace Reimagined.
The event brought together some of the industry’s most innovative thought leaders, designers and experts to examine the challenges of modern workplace design and environments. It was a wide-ranging discussion featuring a wealth of thoughtful perspectives and advice.

We also discovered:
- 7% of employees reported experiencing hearing damage as a consequence of workplace noise
- 8 in 10 employers have lost talent due to return-to-office mandates
- 2 in 3 workers aged 25-34 would quit if required to return to the office full-time

Overall, our findings point to a simple reality: if they want to encourage a return to the office, employers must make changes to their workplace design and transform them into spaces that uplift their employees.
